Bazaar- We need your help!

We are in real need of some extra helpers for the Bazaar. "Burly blokes" are needed for set-up and pack-up. We are also asking for soft drink cans to be dropped off in the neighbourhood. If you think you can help, please see the green sheet sent home last week or contact one of our parent reps; Marianne, Louise, Debra and Deb.

We've had some amazing research happening in Neighbourhood 1. Students have been researching how their chosen technology impacts upon us and the environment. Next we will be setting ourselves a challenge which we will then address (such as balancing how much technology we use in a day). Have a look at the attached picture to see how we have mapped out our inquiry.

Student Voice

In the past few days, Neighbourhood One has been running workshops to gain feedback from students about how things are going in the neighbourhood. One of the key points of discussion is the Learning Agreement and how we can best use it to foster a greater sense of independence and accountability, at the same time making the learning engaging for everyone. We had some great responses and now we are continuing to look at how we can best cater for everyone's needs.
Parents will notice that there is no timetable on the back of this week's LA because it is currently being developed in consultation with the students.

We are back.......

.... bigger and better this term! Our neighbourhood has been discussing different ways that we can use this blog to communicate what is happening in Neighbourhood 1. We have formed a group of students who are willing to work as a team to keep the community updated with happenings in the neighbourhood. We will be meeting this week and as from next week you can expect to see more regular postings, highlighting all of the great learning that is happening in the neighbourhood. Watch this space!

Promoting the "real" Australia

As part of our inquiry into identity, we have asked students to prepare a short advertisement that reflects the true Australia. Please read below for the task description students have been given. Feel free to discuss this with your child and ask them to justify some of the choice they have made.

__________________________________________________________________________________

Promoting the “real” Australia

We are looking at the Australian identity and the way the media constructs our identity. However, we have a diverse multicultural identity which is not always promoted.
Many tourism ads are constructed to lure tourists to Australia but is there more to being Australian?
Your task:
Your task is to create your own promotional video of Australia with an alternative view of what you think represents the real Australian identity.

What to include:

Using the templates which we used in class, decide on the following key points.

Ø Setting (environment)

Ø Language

Ø People

Ø What are people doing in your promotion?

Ø Soundtrack

Ø Camera angles

Ø In creating this promotion, you are trying to make people feel….

Think carefully about things you might make reference to that help to make Australia what it is, such as: medical system, education, science, arts, literature, food, opportunities, and multicultural festivals/customs.

Your clip should go for no longer than 90seconds. Please also remember that footage will be provided for you on the school server. Given that the focus is creatively using what is provided, any material on your promotion should only be 10% of the total time.

Due date: Friday, 27th May
You will be required to keep a journal of your contributions and your reflections on what you have learned each time you complete some work. Please feel free to use the reflective strips to help guide you.

Mathletics

In the last couple of days we have given students usernames and passwords for Mathletics http://www.mathletics.com.au/ . Mathletics is used by more than 7000 schools and 3 million students worldwide. It offers students the chance to consolidate their understandings in an engaging and competitive (if they choose) manner. Students create an online identity where they can compete against other students from around the world. The only information shared is their first name and school. (e.g Tony S, Princes Hill Primary School, Australia). The school has paid for this program which can be accessed either at school or at home. The best way to understand how this website can be used is by asking your child to demonstrate the capabilities of this website with you.

Please note that this program is not designed to replace the teaching and learning program, but can support your child's learning.

Would the real Australian please stand up!

We are well and truly into our inquiry into identity. We are beginning to move on from the concept of individual identity to a shared sense of identity. We plan to look at our national identity, asking the question: What makes us Australian?

Students: Please contribute your thoughts on how you think you would describe an Australian.

Interschool Sport

Training has begun for Interschool Sport which will start early in Term 2. The sports are tee-ball, netball, football and soccer. Watch this space for more details. Go Princes Hill!

Welcome everyone!

Tim, Anne and Tony would like to welcome you to our new online space- 56TAT (Tim-Anne-Tony!).
The idea of this space is for students, parents and teachers to have a place to celebrate what great learning is happening in Neighbourhood 1. Feel free to contribute any thoughts or suggestions as to how we might improve the blog.
Otherwise, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride!
