Promoting the "real" Australia

As part of our inquiry into identity, we have asked students to prepare a short advertisement that reflects the true Australia. Please read below for the task description students have been given. Feel free to discuss this with your child and ask them to justify some of the choice they have made.

Promoting the “real” Australia

We are looking at the Australian identity and the way the media constructs our identity. However, we have a diverse multicultural identity which is not always promoted.
Many tourism ads are constructed to lure tourists to Australia but is there more to being Australian?
Your task:
Your task is to create your own promotional video of Australia with an alternative view of what you think represents the real Australian identity.

What to include:

Using the templates which we used in class, decide on the following key points.

Ø Setting (environment)

Ø Language

Ø People

Ø What are people doing in your promotion?

Ø Soundtrack

Ø Camera angles

Ø In creating this promotion, you are trying to make people feel….

Think carefully about things you might make reference to that help to make Australia what it is, such as: medical system, education, science, arts, literature, food, opportunities, and multicultural festivals/customs.

Your clip should go for no longer than 90seconds. Please also remember that footage will be provided for you on the school server. Given that the focus is creatively using what is provided, any material on your promotion should only be 10% of the total time.

Due date: Friday, 27th May
You will be required to keep a journal of your contributions and your reflections on what you have learned each time you complete some work. Please feel free to use the reflective strips to help guide you.

Phoebe and Mredith have been filmed by the Education Department for a video that is available to all Victorian schools and used in presentations for principals in the Northern Region. Well done Phoebe and Meredith!
